SEO Managers stand at the top of the salary scale, earning ₹9 LPA, representing the highest compensation in the field according to Ambition Box data.
The SEO career path shows a steady progression in earnings – starting from trainees at ₹1.5 LPA to executives at ₹2.1 LPA.
Mid-level positions like SEO Analysts and Specialists earn between ₹3.6 to 4.6 LPA.
A significant jump occurs at the Senior SEO Specialist level at ₹7.9 LPA, finally reaching the peak at the Manager position with ₹9 LPA.

LinkedIn data shows that many job listings offer flexible work options. Out of 1,601 SEO job listings on LinkedIn, around 50% are office-based, 39.8% are fully remote, and 10.1% are hybrid roles, blending office and remote work.
However, data from Naukri, which analyzed 1,314 SEO roles, shows a much stronger focus on office-based positions. A large majority—98.2%—require physical presence, while remote and hybrid roles are rare.
The data suggests that companies tend to favor in-office work over remote arrangements.

We analyzed 1,314 Search Engine Optimization jobs and found that 70.2% of positions in Pune offer an average annual salary of 3-6 lakhs, establishing this as the dominant salary range in the field.
31.4% of entry-level roles offer packages between 0-3 lakhs, while 55.9% of positions provide compensation in the 6-10 lakhs bracket. With most jobs concentrated in the 0-10 lakhs range, only 20.9% of opportunities extend beyond this bracket.
The higher salary tiers, ranging from 10 lakhs to 70 lakhs include 16.6% of roles offering 10-15 lakhs, 3.4% paying 15-25 lakhs, and a mere 1% of positions commanding salaries above 25 lakhs.
While Search Engine Optimization offers stable earning potential in the moderate range, opportunities for premium compensation are notably limited.
How many years of experience is actually needed for an SEO role?
We analyzed 880 SEO job listings on Ambition Box and found that the amount of experience required for an SEO job depends on the role.
Only 6.47% of SEO positions (179 jobs) accept candidates with no experience. The majority of roles (72%) require 2-5 years of experience, while approximately 20% of job opportunities are available for those with over 5 years of experience.
Companies are primarily looking for professionals with mid-level experience, while advanced and entry-level roles are less common, pointing to a job market that values some expertise but has fewer openings as the experience level increases.
What are the skills for SEO?
Based on Job descriptions, these skills outline the core competencies required for a well-rounded SEO professional:
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization): Knowledge of optimizing websites to improve their rankings on search engines, utilizing best practices to increase visibility.
- Google Analytics: Proficiency in using Google Analytics to assess website traffic, user behavior, and SEO campaign effectiveness, providing insights into performance metrics.
- Link Building: Ability to create high-quality backlinks from reputable sources to increase domain authority and improve search engine rankings.

Out of the 1,317 SEO jobs analyzed, 85.99% (1,133 jobs) required a bachelor’s degree. In comparison, only 71.36% (940 jobs) preferred a master’s degree.
Additionally, only 4.4% of employers (58 out of 1,317) would hire candidates with just an undergraduate qualification, while only 1.5% (20 jobs) were open to hiring candidates with a diploma.
This suggests that, while advanced degrees are valued, a bachelor’s degree remains the primary qualification for SEO roles.
What industries need SEO the most?
In this analysis of 1,317 SEO jobs by industry, the IT sector emerges as the largest employer, accounting for 38.4% of all SEO roles.
The professional services sector also shows significant demand, contributing 18.4% of SEO jobs, followed by the media, entertainment, and telecom sectors at 17.4%.
On the other end, The bottom 5 industries, infrastructure, consumer, manufacturing, healthcare, and miscellaneous combined only contribute to 11.46% of total SEO jobs.
Despite having significant online presence potential, traditional sectors like Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Infrastructure are notably underutilizing SEO opportunities, suggesting a massive untapped market for SEO professionals who can demonstrate value in these sectors.
